Goals of the ESL Curriculum

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is a Language program for students with limited English proficiency (LEP). The program is designed to build and increase English proficiency by assessing current language aptitude, and then developing a learning plan for each English language learner (ELL) based on their specific language needs.  Through a variety of language learning activities, the ESL teacher will target, teach, and assess important skills  in each of the four language domains, reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The skills presented will help students in meeting the New Jersey Learning Standards.   In addition to building language skills, the ESL program also serves as an advocate for English language Learners (ELLs), their families, and to all of the educators and staff members who work with and support our ELL community.  Leaders and advocates of the ESL program also help to facilitate ELLs’ adjustment to their new environments by helping them to understand, explore, and appropriately navigate American culture.

Overview of Program Objectives:

-Support ESL students to gradually attain proficiency in English for communication in school and the community.

-To help students attain the social and academic language proficiency necessary to succeed in content area classrooms, as well as school and home communities.

-  To prepare students to successfully meet criteria on standardized tests such as the PARCC and ACCESS.

-To provide instruction that meets both the cultural as well as linguistic needs of each student.

-To encourage and help instill an appreciation and understanding  of different cultures and their historical and present contributions to our society.
